USF Health 3rd Annual Interprofessional Education Day

The University of South Florida is hosting their 3rd Annual USF Health Interprofessional Education (IPE) Day. This year, IPE Day will be virtual via Microsoft Teams Live Event. Faculty, staff, students, and health care partners are encouraged to attend this unique and collaborative opportunity. The goal is to continue to transform the way we practice health care as interprofessional partners, leveraging collective expertise and strengths to improve patient outcomes and quality of care. The Threatening and Violent Dementia Patient

This presentation (1:15:36) given by Dr. Whitney Carlson from Harborview Geriatric Psychiatry Services in Seattle discusses the steps to evaluate patients with dementia who display threatening or violent behavior. She also reviews ways to keep patients and staff safe in the context of evaluating patients displaying threatening or violent behaviors. Finally, she describes how to implement best evidence-based practices in the management of violent and agitated patients with dementia. Caring for the Caregiver

This presentation (1:22:13) given by Dr. Carrie Rubenstein from the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington amd the Northwest Workforce Enhancement Center discusses the financial, social, medical and emotional challenges dementia caregivers are facing. She also discusses tools for improving communication with caregivers. Finally, she highlights novel ways to support caregivers through the use of an interprofessional team. Rational Preventive Care in the Context of Dementia

This presentation (1:10:20) given by Dr. Amy Thomas, Research Fellow, VA Puget Sound Health Care Systems, discusses the prognoses of different types of dementia. Dr. Thomas identifies the benefit of common primary prevention treatments. Finally, she ends her presentation by discussing the advantages of patient-centered approaches to the care of individuals with dementia. Ethical Dilemmas in the Care of Older People with Cognitive Impairment

This presentation (1:22:02) is given by Dr. Elizabeth Vig from the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine,University of Washington School of Medicine and Veterans Administration's Hospital where she chairs the VA Ethics Consultation Service. She describes a systemic approach to thinking about ethical dilemmas. She discusses how to approach cases involving individuals with cognitive impairment. Finally, Dr. Vig ends her presentation by reflecting on how our own beliefs and values may be influencing how we respond to certain cases.

FlourishCare Curriculum: Didactic Modules

As part of this curriculum developed by the University of Louisville Trager Institute and the Republic Bank Foundation Optimal Aging Clinic, learners will complete five online modules designed to teach them the core concepts of geriatric care. Topics to be covered include: roles of the interprofessional team members, motivational interviewing and three case-based modules focusing on the care of an older adult with complicated comorbid chronic conditions in need of community support.

FlourishCare Curriculum: Interdisciplinary Case Management Experience (ICME)

These interdisciplinary case management experiences (ICMEs) from the University of Louisville Trager Institute and the Republic Bank Foundation Optimal Aging Center are intended for students from multiple disciplines to come together to consider a case related to care of older adults, develop an interprofessional care plan, share documentation, and resolve a simulated scenario case. Though the ICME sessions are intended for U of L students, the cases and related documents and videos are available for public use.

Finding Joy in Caregiving

This narrated Powerpoint presentation (47:37 minutes) from the Johns Hopkins Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program is presented by Loretta Woodward Veney, author of Being My Mom's Mom and other books for family caregivers. In the webinar, she shares personal stories and provides advice to equip and inspire caregivers to find the joy in caregiving using helpful strategies.

Tips for the Champions (Caregivers in the home)

These three short videos (under 20 minutes) from the Johns Hopkins Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program present activity ideas for caregivers of older adults. Presenters Maggie Rogers, Recreational Therapist, Certified Dementia Practitioner, and Rebecca Aclin, Therapeutic Recreation Specialis, both from John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, demonstrate and explain the activities with props.
