Wisdom Keepers and Opioid Use – Influence of Stigma, Shame, Loneliness

This presentation (56:35 minutes) by Dr. Ednita Wright, Chair and Professors of Human Services and Alcohol/Substance Abuse Counseling at Onandaga Community College provides an overview of opioid use among older adults (Wisdom Keepers); reasons for abuse; the power of the use stigmatizing language, the reason that language matters; how loneliness and shame increase the use of opioids among Wisdom Keepers; and effective ways to reduce the stigma that older adults face which keep them from the support they need and deserve. The presentation begins approximately 4 minutes into the video.

Influenza Prevention and Containment for Older Adult Populations

This online learning module for CNAs and other staff discusses influenza prevention and containment methods in the older adult population. At the conclusion of this program, learners will: state the primary means of preventing themselves from getting the flu; describe the difference between a cold and the flu; and apply strategies designed to prevent them from spreading the flu to others.
