Building Effective Interprofessional Education for Collaborative Practice

The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) will hold its next Institute on May 19-21, 2020, at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Learning Center located at 655 K St, NW, Washington, DC 20001. The Spring 2020 IPEC Institute is returning to the popular theme of building interprofessional education  for collaborative practice (IPECP)

The Spring 2020 IPEC Institute is designed to include both interprofessional teams and individual participants.

Difficult Conversations in Healthcare: Teaching and Practice in an Interprofessional World is a 1-day interprofessional faculty development course that offers the opportunity to learn about a variety of innovative concepts, methods and strategies for teaching and enhancing relational capacities, communication skills, attention to values and ‘everyday ethics’, professionalism, and interprofessional teamwork, collaboration and practice.

Interprofessional Education Exchange (iPEX) Program to Accept Applications

Applications for the Interprofessional Education Exchange (iPEX) program will be accepted beginning February 1 - April 30, 2020. This NCI funded project provides training and mentoring in developing and implementing IPE curricula and learning activities. Interdisciplinary faculty teams from 8-10 institutions are accepted annually to receive online and face-to-face training in the skills necessary for the development of IPE focused on palliative care education. Teams develop a program unique to their institution and receive mentoring to assist with implementation.

Although social media and the beauty industry may have you believe charcoal to be a safe oral care product, there is insufficient evidence that using charcoal toothpastes and powders provide any significant tooth whitening or mouth health benefits. Further, there are more potential oral health risks to using charcoal that are supported by evidence-based research in this area.

TOSH: An Interprofessional Success for Students and Faculty

OHNEP is thrilled to announce the release of two educational videos on our annual Teaching Oral-Systemic Health (TOSH) Inteprofessional Simulation and Case Study Experience for students at NYU and Long Island University. Since 2013, OHNEP has lead this interprofessional experience with as many as 800 Nurse Practitioner, Midwifery, Dental, Medicine and Pharmacy students each year from NYU's College of Nursing, College of Dentistry and School of Medicine, along with students LIU's Pharmacy program.

OHNEP's Undergraduate Nursing Interprofessional Oral Health Faculty Tool Kit

The second edition of OHNEP's Interprofessional Oral Health Faculty Tool Kit is an innovative open-source, user-friendly product for faculty to use for weaving oral health and its links to overall health into their Undergraduate nursing curricula. The undergraduate tool kit is designed to guide faculty in embedding "oral health bytes" into existing undergraduate nursing courses to demonstrate the oral-systemic connection.

eLearning Modules from the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Preceptor Development Program

The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Preceptor Development Program (PC-NP-PDP) at NYU's Rory Meyers College of Nursing has developed a series of eLearning Modules as part of their mission to enhance Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSA) of NP preceptors. These modules, along with several other resources from PC-NP-PDP, aim to increase the number of trained Nurse Practitioner Preceptors (Clinical Educators) to further improve the education to practice transition for students and assure that students develop "practice-ready" skills. 

Oral Health Patient Facts

The OHNEP Program and the American College of Physicians (ACP) teamed up in 2015 to create four patient-related oral health literacy fact sheets for distribution to internal medicine physicians and primary care providers.
