This report describes the landscape of PFACs in New York State hospitals, as well as their prevalence and variation in characteristics. The report also explores PFACs’ performance and impact, not only on hospital strategy and operations but also on the quality and safety of care.

Research in the social and behavioral sciences points to possibilities for preventing or slowing the development of dementia and for substantially reducing its social and economic impacts. At the request of the National Institute on Aging of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conducted a consensus study using a decadal survey to assess the contributions of research in the social and behavioral sciences. This report discusses survey findings on Interprofessional Education (IPE) accreditation processes of the Health Professions Accreditation Councils’ Forum (the Forum). The Forum is a coalition of 15 accreditation authorities for the regulated health professions in Australia[1].

The results found that while telemedicine services may hold particular promise for older adults in need of long-term care, older Americans are concerned that it could result in lower-quality care.

The survey found that as family and friends take on more of the responsibility of caring for the nation’s growing senior population, their own personal and professional lives often pay the price. This study summarizes the opportunity costs and health impacts on those who devote their time to providing long-term care.

This report summarizes a survey conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research on long-term care in America. The results found that in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic that was especially devastating for nursing homes, the vast majority of Americans want to age at home and want government action to help them do so. This report also discusses ways for government programs and insurance companies to help organize this care for the aging older adult population.

The WHO Global Report on Ageism outlines a framework for action to reduce ageism including specific recommendations for different actors (e.g. government, UN agencies, civil society organizations, private sector). It brings together the best available evidence on the nature and magnitude of ageism, its determinants and its impact. It outlines what strategies work to prevent and counter ageism, identifies gaps and proposes future lines of research to improve our understanding of ageism.

Family members provide significant amounts of care to relatives with complex needs who live independently. Programs that pay family members to provide care can help support home- and community-based care for Medicaid enrollees and help states address demand for long-term services and supports.

The National Center was honored to be commissioned to submit a paper on "Social Determinants of Health: Nursing, Health Professions and Interprofessional Education at a Crossroads" to the National Academy of Medicine to accompany its recent report "The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity (2021)". Findings and recommendations from the commissioned paper can be found throughout the report.
