The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced a new national action framework to advance medical-dental integration (MDI) in the US. We know that good oral health is essential to promote overall health, yet medical and dental care continue to operate in silos. This framework will pave the way for providers to improve MDI across health care and public health settings and support whole-person integrated care.

Background

In 2019, the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative (AIHC) and the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (National Center) charged the Interprofessional Education Organizational Models Task Force to study the organizational models and structures of US IPE programs using a mixed methodology of quantitative survey and qualitative analysis.

A growing body of evidence about the effectiveness of system-wide initiatives reducing the incidence of hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) underscores how oral hygiene prevention protocols are effective. Yet there is no national standardized quality measure that requires monitoring and reporting about the incidence and prevalence of HAP.

Medically-Necessary Dental Care: A Major Step Toward Oral Health Care for All

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has taken an important step toward improving oral health outcomes that are linked to overall health. On November 3, CMS announced that Medicare will begin making payment in 2023 for dental services necessary to identify and eliminate oral and dental infections prior to, and contemporaneously with, organ transplant, cardiac valve replacement, and valvuloplasty procedures.

Research in the social and behavioral sciences points to possibilities for preventing or slowing the development of dementia and for substantially reducing its social and economic impacts. At the request of the National Institute on Aging of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conducted a consensus study using a decadal survey to assess the contributions of research in the social and behavioral sciences. This report complements an array of initiatives occurring as part of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's.

The 2020 Profile of Older Americans published by the Administration on Aging (AoA) is an annual report of critical statistics related to the older population in the United States. The Profile illustrates the shifting demographics of Americans age 65 and older. It includes key topic areas such as income, living arrangements, education, health and caregiving as well as special sections on COVID-19 and mental health. The report includes maps, charts and other data visualizations.
