By the end of this presentation, learners should be able to: (1) understand the cognitive impairment continuum and be able to define mild cognitive impairment and dementia; (2) recognize that the majority of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias have a vascular contribution -- Vascular Cognitive Impairment; and (3) become familiar with modifiable approaches to prevent cognitive impairment, including results from the SPRINT-MIND study. He speaks about denial in a different way, almost as a defense mechanism rather than how we might view it in more normal terms. Slides are available to download. The session reviews current pharmacologic approaches to the care of persons with dementia, with a special focus on the use and misuse of antipsychotic medications. It also reviews successful non-pharmacological approaches to distress-signal behaviors and a discussion of why reducing antipsychotic prescribing to people with dementia remains so important.
