Collections Outcomes-based Evaluation Tools

This collection explores the nature and purpose of evaluation methods commonly utilized in the IPE literature with a focus on intervention outcomes. The evaluation may involve assessment of participants, but more commonly involves learner satisfaction and attitudinal change. Of the 90 studies included, most evaluated soon after the educational intervention, only five specifically referred to an evaluation framework, and the most frequently used tool was the RIPLS.  The studies collected here show a noteworthy reliance on students’ self-rated perceptions of their attitudes towards collaborative practice collected through surveys, focus groups and interviews.

Anaesthetists' Non-Technical Skills (ANTS): Evaluation of a behavioural marker system

Anaesthetists' Non-Technical Skills (ANTS): Evaluation of a behavioural marker system

National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education's picture
Submitted by National Center... on Nov 24, 2014 - 10:45am CST

BACKGROUND: Non-technical skills are critical for good anaesthetic practice but are not addressed explicitly in normal training. Realization of the need to train and assess these skills is growing, but these activities must be based on properly developed skills frameworks and validated measurement tools. A prototype behavioural marker system was developed using human factors research techniques. The aim of this study was to conduct an experimental evaluation to establish its basic psychometric properties and usability.

Will opposites attract? Similarities and differences in students' perceptions of the stereotype profiles of other health and social care professional groups

The extent to which health and social care (HSC) students hold stereotypical views of other HSC professional groups is of great potential importance to team working in health care. This paper explores students' perceptions of different HSC professional groups at the beginning of their university programmes. Findings are presented from an analysis of baseline data collected as part of the New Generation Project longitudinal cohort study which is assessing the impact of interprofessional education over time on a range of variables including stereotyping.

Development of an Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale

Development of an Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale

Madeline H. Schmitt's picture
Submitted by Madeline H. Schmitt on Oct 14, 2014 - 4:14pm CDT

The authors describe the development and psychometric testing across three study phases of an Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale. The measure contains two subscales: Quality of Care/Process (14 items) and Physician Centrality (6 items). The Quality of Care/Process subscale measures team members' perceptions of the quality of care delivered by health care teams and the quality of teamwork to accomplish this. The Physician Centrality subscale measures team members' attitudes toward physicians' authority in teams and their control over information about patients.

There have been increasing calls for a competency-based approach in interprofessional education (IPE). The purpose of this multi-site research project was to develop a validated set of interprofessional collaborator competencies and an associated competency-based assessment rubric, in both English and French languages. The first phase involved a detailed comparative analysis of peer-reviewed and grey literature using typological analysis to construct a draft list of interprofessional collaborator competency categories and statements.

Submitted by Judith Gedney Baggs on Jul 2, 2014 - 3:52pm CDT

The psychometric assessment of a new instrument for measurement of the construct of nurse-physician collaboration in making specific patient care decisions. Collaboration and Satisfaction About Care Decisions (CSACD), is reported. Content validity for the tool was supported by literature review, nurse and physician experts, and potential subjects. In a pilot study 58 neonatal intensive care nurses' and resident physicians' responses showed variance; alpha reliability of the collaboration questions was 0.95.

Submitted by Susan Connors on Feb 12, 2014 - 3:52pm CST

The Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale (AITCS) is a 37 item inventory with 4 subscales:  partnership, cooperation, coordination, and shared decision making.  Authors concluded it was a valid and reliable instrument. They  found it to load on 3 factors explaining 61.02% of the variance.  Internal consistency reliability for each subscale ranged from 0.80 to 0.97, with an overall reliability of 0.98.
