The ATOSCE is a simulation and assessment tool involving an interprofessional, ambulatory (outpatient) encounter.  Western University of Health Sciences developed the tool to provide geriatric-focused IPE teamwork education and practice with simulated exercises. Two cases were developed and scripted for actors portraying the standardized patients, a standardized caregiver, and standardized clinicians.

Development of the Assessment for Collaborative Environments (ACE-15): A Tool to Measure Perceptions of Interprofessional "Teamness"

Development of the Assessment for Collaborative Environments (ACE-15): A Tool to Measure Perceptions of Interprofessional "Teamness"

As interprofessional education moves from classroom to clinical settings, assessing clinical training sites for a high level of “teamness” to ensure optimal learning environments is critical but often problematic ahead of student placement. We developed a tool (Assessment for Collaborative Environments, or ACE), suitable for a range of clinical settings and health professionals, that allows rapid assessment of a clinical practice’s teamwork qualities. We collected evidence of tool validity including content, response process, internal structure, and convergent validity.

Interprofessional education (IPE) focusing on patient centered care is an emerging trend in health care education. With the goal of facilitating interprofessional teamwork and collaboration, an IPE forum was implemented following the keys to success outlined by Buring et al, and the impact of the IPE experience on health science students was examined using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) and the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS).

PURPOSE:

Teamwork has become an integral part of health care delivery. Such emphasis on teamwork has generated the need to systematically measure and improve the learning and performance of health care teams. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive assessment instrument, the Interprofessional Education and Practice Inventory (IPEPI), to evaluate learning and performance in interprofessional health care teams.

GT-OSVE: Geriatric Transitions Objective Structured Video Examination

GT-OSVE: Geriatric Transitions Objective Structured Video Examination

Timothy W. Farrell's picture
Submitted by Timothy W. Farrell on Jul 19, 2015 - 9:42pm CDT

The Geriatric Transitions Objective Structured Video Examination (GT-OSVE) is a series of 3 video cases depicting the same hypothetical patient undergoing transitions of care in different locations: hospital to home, skilled nursing facility to home, and home to an assisted living facility. The GT-OSVE may be used as an evaluative tool to assess trainees' ability formulate transitions plans and to assess team functioning. Alternatively, the GT-OSVE may be used as an educational tool for teaching about transitions of care.

IPAS is a scale designed to assess attitudes that relate to the 2011 Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice. IPAS is one of the first scales to focus specifically on the Core Competencies. IPAS consists of 27 items in 5 sub-scales, which we have called "Teamwork, Roles, and Responsibilities", "Patient-Centeredness", "Interprofessional Biases", "Diversity & Ethics", and "Community-Centeredness". IPAS was created from factor analysis of survey data collected from over 700 student respondents at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center in 2012.

Patient and family engagement is a growing topic in healthcare as we look for ways to improve population health, provide better experience of care and lower healthcare costs. In recognition of the importance of patient and family engagement, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation funded the American Institutes for Research to develop a roadmap for practice and research. This roadmap is a call to action for anyone interested in advancing work related to patient and family engagement. It includes:
