This poster presentation details an innovative safety program which incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to team debriefing and high-fidelity simulation-based training during a simulated critical event (shoulder dystocia). This simulation program includes all providers (physicians, midwives, nurses, and residents) associated with our obstetric unit and reinforces the concept of patient safety through practiced communication and teamwork.

The mission of the IHI Open School is to advance health care improvement and patient safety competencies in the next generation of health professionals worldwide.

In August 2010, the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) issued a request for proposals to establish Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education.  Part of VA's New Models of Care initiative, the centers utilize VA primary care settings to develop and test innovative approaches to prepare physician residents and students, advanced practice nurse and undergraduate nursing students, and associated health trainees for primary care practice in the 21st Century. Thirty-seven VHA field facilities enthusiastically embraced this opportunity and competed for the Centers.

Working together leads to successful outcomes. This is at the core of the Geriatric Interdisciplinary Team (GITT) initiative. GITT is a resource of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing (HIGN). Recognizing that older adults with multiple conditions rely on health care professionals from a variety of disciplines, the initiative was created in 1995 to improve care by enhancing the interdisciplinary training of health profession students and professionals.
