Interprofessional education gets big boost in rural communities

For the first time [from 2012], New Zealand nursing, medical, physiotherapy, pharmacy and dental students have a chance to participate in a purpose-built interprofessional programme of clinically-based learning as one component of their final year courses. As a result of this programme, students will learn to work together in health care teams and understand how to work across health disciplines within Māori models of health and health care. They will experience living and working in two adjoining rural regions of New Zealand [Tairāwhiti and Whakatāne], gaining insight into the particular health issues and health burdens of those regions, and experience the strengths and limitations of regional and rural health delivery. They will also have the opportunity to experience what’s special about rural life, both professionally and personally.
