Adult Protective Services Workforce Innovations (APSWI) is a training program of the Academy for Professional Excellence, a project of the San Diego State University School of Social Work. APSWI provides innovative workforce development to APS professionals and their partners. Our mission is to provide exceptional learning and development experiences for the transformation of individuals, organizations, and communities to ensure that abused and vulnerable older adults and adults with disabilities receive high quality, effective interventions and services.

Medical professionals will work with dying patients in all disciplines, and the process is difficult as care shifts from eliminating or mitigating illness to preparing for death. This is a difficult transition for patients, their loved ones, and healthcare providers to undergo. This activity provides paradigms for the process of moving toward death as well as a discussion of how they should and should not be applied, supporting the interprofessional team to address the unique needs of their patients and guide them and their loved ones through the process.  

The Foundations of Practice for Interprofessional Age-Friendly Care is for healthcare professionals who are interested in developing a foundational practice for age-friendly care. It is divided into an introduction, and three short sections: The Aging Population, Models of Care and the Interprofessional Team and Age-Friendly Care. 

Patient Priorities Care helps patients and clinicians focus all decision-making and healthcare on what matters most: patients’ own health priorities. It was developed by clinicians, patients, caregivers, health system leaders, and payers. Healthcare students and professionals are also able to gain Continued Medical Education and Maintainance of Certification credits by utilizing these toolkits. Pressure injuries, sometimes referred to as pressure ulcers, are injuries to the skin and the tissue below that are a result of pressure on the skin for a long time. Pressure injuries most often arise on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as the heels, ankles, hips and tailbone. People who are most at risk of pressure injuries have medical conditions that keep them from changing positions or spend most of their time in a bed or a chair. Most pressure injuries heal with treatment, but some never heal completely.

The demands of caring for others can lead to high levels of stress in even the best of times. We all face our own set of stressors, related to work or life outside of work. All of these stressors impact our wellness and capacity as caregivers. Regulation activities can help us shift from a state of fear and overwhelm to a state of calm and focus. We invite you to try out some of the exercises from the videos in this module.

Osteoporosis, a common condition of the skeletal system, benefits from a comprehensive approach to providing effective and age-friendly care. Primary care providers have a significant role in screening multiple health systems, including the skeletal system. An age-friendly interprofessional collaborative approach provides an effective means of addressing bone health. This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists.

This website is a great training module for healthcare providers on how to effectively integrate Caregivers in care and the care team "Caregivers As Partners in Care Teams". It is easy to navigate, practical, contains many resources and tools, free, and is less than 1-hour long. Caregivers As Partners in Care Teams (CAP-CT) is a nation-wide initiati​ve that provides health care teams with the skills and confidence to include family caregivers in a patient's care journey. CAP-CT gives health care teams the skills to identify, engage, and support caregivers.

This training program consists of flexible, interactive modules to help practitioners improve their skills in delivering serious news and discussing goals of care and life-sustaining treatment decisions with seriously ill patients. It is intended for practitioners who care for patients with serious illness in outpatient, inpatient, long-term care, and home care settings.
