Health care is moving toward a workforce that emphasizes teamwork competencies and working in teams of providers to optimally meet health care needs. To be prepared for the realities of ongoing care delivery changes, health professions education is changing to include a greater focus on Interprofessional Education, preparing all health professions students to deliberately work together in order to build a better quality, more efficient, and safer health care system.

This learning activity is grounded in IPEC Competency Two: Roles and Responsibilities. The purpose of the video is to enhance the student’s knowledge of their own role as well as the roles and contributions of other professions. Therefore, the primary focus of the video is to illustrate how health professionals from various fields impact the health of public as well as individual plans of health care and the resultant health outcomes rather than to highlight the specific details of a patient care conference.

The ‘Integrative Wisdom’ series from Integrative Therapeutics is a collection of insights from individuals across the integrative medicine community, who share this common mission: making integrative medicine part of every healthcare discussion. Though we all have different perspectives on how we’ll get there…it’s clear we have a lot to offer one another, and that as a community, we can drive this mission forward and create real change in the world.

These videos show a care conference, convened by a public health nurse, with a patient's pharmacist, physician and veterinarian.  The first part highlights the struggles of facilitating an interprofessional group among professions who are used to working in their uniprofessional settings.  The second part shows partial resolution of the unhealthy team dynamics as facilitated by the public health nurse.

In March 2015, Dr. Frank Cerra spoke at a symposium at DePaul University, in which he provided an overview for advancing health care through the “Nexus.” Dr. Cerra stressed the rapid redesign of health care delivery and the subsequent need for health care leaders to strengthen their commitment to implementing an interprofessional approach.

On April 14, 2015, Dr. Frank Cerra provided the keynote address at the Northern Maine Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Summit. During the presentation, he highlighted the work of the National Center in driving national change to a team-based, outcome-focused model of practice.

Picker Institute’s Eight Principles of Patient-Centered Care originated with the Seven Dimensions of Patient-Centered Care, whose development was traced in the 1993 groundbreaking book Through the Patient’s Eyes. Using a wide range of focus groups—recently discharged patients, family members, physicians and non-physician hospital staff—combined with a review of pertinent literature, researchers from Harvard Medical School, on behalf of Picker Institute and The Commonwealth Fund, defined seven primary dimensions of patient-centered care.

The Interprofessional Health Council (IPHC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a student organization with representation from 13 different health professional programs on campus.  Funded in part by a generous grant from Target, IPHC recently hosted its annual educational conference.  Over 100 students and faculty attended "Collaborating for Care: Interprofessional Health Summit 2015," which featured Barbara Brandt, PhD, Director of the National Center, as a keynote speaker.  Watch Dr. Brandt's address at the link below.
