By the end of this presentation, learners should be able to: 1) discuss the importance of detecting early cognitive decline; 2) identify the steps for a cognitive evaluation and the criteria for the most common forms of dementia; and 3) describe what works to slow cognitive decline, including medications.

Finally, she describes how to implement best evidence-based practices in the management of violent and agitated patients with dementia. This presentation (1:22:13) given by Dr. Carrie Rubenstein from the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington amd the Northwest Workforce Enhancement Center discusses the financial, social, medical and emotional challenges dementia caregivers are facing. She also discusses tools for improving communication with caregivers. Finally, she highlights novel ways to support caregivers through the use of an interprofessional team. This presentation (1:10:20) given by Dr. Amy Thomas, Research Fellow, VA Puget Sound Health Care Systems, discusses the prognoses of different types of dementia. Dr. Thomas identifies the benefit of common primary prevention treatments. Finally, she ends her presentation by discussing the advantages of patient-centered approaches to the care of individuals with dementia. This presentation (1:22:02) is given by Dr. Elizabeth Vig from the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine,University of Washington School of Medicine and Veterans Administration's Hospital where she chairs the VA Ethics Consultation Service. She describes a systemic approach to thinking about ethical dilemmas. She discusses how to approach cases involving individuals with cognitive impairment. Finally, Dr. Vig ends her presentation by reflecting on how our own beliefs and values may be influencing how we respond to certain cases.

This webinar (29:22 minutes) given by Dr. Esther Oh discusses Medicare wellness visits and what to do next if a patient's cognitive screening comes back positive. Case studies and hypothetical patients are discussed as examples of what to do next in the screening process.
