It’s graduation season! In my role as associate vice president, I attend several ceremonies each year at the University of Minnesota. I have the opportunity to meet and learn from young health professionals who work every day to transform health care through integrating practice and education. It’s exciting and reassuring to see the next generation of health care leaders walk across the stages.

Implementing the "Nexus" in Michigan

Implementing the "Nexus" in Michigan

If you spend any time with the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education team, you will hear the word. And you might wonder what it means. What exactly is the “Nexus?” It means working toward a future where health care practice and health professions education operate in a meaningful system, learning and working together in teams with students, patients, families and communities to make a positive impact on the Triple Aim of improving the patient experience of care, improving the health of populations and reducing the per capita cost of health care.

Living the education-practice "Nexus" in Virginia

Living the education-practice "Nexus" in Virginia

Recently, I visited Virginia Commonwealth University to participate in the Emswiller Symposium, an interprofessional, multi-institutional meeting supported by Jewell Emswiller in memory of her husband, Carl.  During the visit I learned that Carl, a pharmacist, had been a trailblazer in promoting interprofessional team work in his community of Winchester, Va.  I’m certain that Carl would have loved the energy of the meeting in his honor.

A great conversation on the frontline

A great conversation on the frontline

Last week, Sean Lind, our Resource Exchange manager, sent an email to our staff:  “Hi folks, the Brookings Institute highlights team-based care in this recent ‘Up Front‘ piece”. This email made me smile.

Take a walk on the practice side

Take a walk on the practice side

Last Thursday, something unusual happened – I had time to think.  Actually, I scheduled it in.  I was preparing to travel and speak in several venues:  Virginia Commonwealth University hosted by Alan Dow, a VCU assistant vice president, and then off to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to work with the Nexus Innovations Incubator Network team implementing practice models.  While there, I had a scheduled Institute of Medicine webinar requested by Marilyn Chow, a Kaiser Permanente vice president and member of our National Advisory Council.
