This report demonstrates the application of a competency model to the regulated and unregulated professions of medical radiation technology, social work, pharmacy, and psychology. The competency model is based on the CanMEDS framework and was originally applied to the professions of medicine, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and nursing in an earlier work. The framework identifies the core competencies common to learners in health care, which are professional (and health advocate), expert, scholar, manager, communicator, and collaborator.

In the absence of an interprofessional competency framework in Canada, the College of Health Disciplines (CHD) at the University of British Columbia developed a universally applicable framework. This article discusses the development of the "BC Competency Framework for Interprofessional Collaboration". Building on a Health Canada funded initiative through the Interprofessional Network of British Columbia (In-BC), the CHD compared and contrasted existing competency frameworks and consulted curriculum and IP experts throughout British Columbia.

National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education's picture
Submitted by National Center... on Mar 14, 2014 - 11:14am CDT

Most shared decision-making (SDM) models within healthcare have been limited to the patient-physician dyad. As a first step towards promoting an interprofessional approach to SDM in primary care, this article reports how an interprofessional and interdisciplinary group developed and achieved consensus on a new interprofessional SDM model. The key concepts within published reviews of SDM models and interprofessionalism were identified, analysed, and discussed by the group in order to reach consensus on the new interprofessional SDM (IP-SDM) model.
