Development and validation of a tool to assess emergency physicians' nontechnical skills

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Nontechnical skills are "the cognitive, social and personal resource skills that complement technical skills, and contribute to safe and efficient task performance." Our research team developed and evaluated the task of developing and validating a behavioral marker system for the observational assessment of emergency physicians' nontechnical skills.

Targeted crisis resource management training improves performance among randomized nursing and medical students

INTRODUCTION: In this study designed with adequate statistical power to detect relevant training effects, investigators evaluated Crisis Resource Management (CRM) training during a simulated patient crisis. This study is guided by the Team Effectiveness Conceptual Model by Kozlowski and Ilgen.

Anaesthetists' Non-Technical Skills (ANTS): Evaluation of a behavioural marker system

BACKGROUND: Non-technical skills are critical for good anaesthetic practice but are not addressed explicitly in normal training. Realization of the need to train and assess these skills is growing, but these activities must be based on properly developed skills frameworks and validated measurement tools. A prototype behavioural marker system was developed using human factors research techniques. The aim of this study was to conduct an experimental evaluation to establish its basic psychometric properties and usability.

A survey of nursing faculty needs for training in use of new technologies for education and practice

This study describes nursing faculty's use, knowledge of, and training needs associated with distance learning, simulation, telehealth, and informatics tools in nursing education and practice. Web-based surveys were completed by 193 faculty members from nursing schools in the western United States. More than half of the respondents were frequent users of distance learning and informatics tools. Approximately 66% of faculty reported they were competent with distance learning and informatics tools.

Interprofessional education in team communication: Working together to improve patient safety

BACKGROUND: Communication failures in healthcare teams are associated with medical errors and negative health outcomes. These findings have increased emphasis on training future health professionals to work effectively within teams. The Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) communication training model, widely employed to train healthcare teams, has been less commonly used to train student interprofessional teams.

Models of Assessment of Religious and Spiritual Needs in Health Care

This paper explores the models used by different mental health care professionals in an ecumenical setting which provides a context and an idiom for religious concerns of the client.

This paper seeks to explore the following questions:

Characterizing motivational styles of professionals who work on interdisciplinary healthcare teams

Relationship Awareness Theory is based on the premise that there is a purpose or motive behind all behavior. The Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) was designed to help individuals identify their motives in relating to others under two kinds of conditions; when everything is going well in their relationships and when they are in conflict with others. The authors administered the SDI over a ten year period to 516 health professionals and advanced level trainees who worked or trained on interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health

In 2008, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the IOM launched a two-year initiative to respond to the need to assess and transform the nursing profession. The IOM appointed the Committee on the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the IOM, with the purpose of producing a report that would make recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing. Interprofessional Education for Collaboration: Learning How to Improve Health from Interprofessional Models Across the Continuum of Education to Practice: Workshop Summary

Every year, the Global Forum undertakes two workshops whose topics are selected by the more than 55 members of the Forum. It was decided in this first year of the Forum's existence that the workshops should lay the foundation for future work of the Forum and the topic that could best provide this base of understanding was "interprofessional education." The first workshop took place August 29-30, 2012, and the second was on November 29-30, 2012. Both workshops focused on linkages between interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice.
