September is Healthy Aging Month, giving health professionals the opportunity to recognize the importance of oral health in promoting overall positive health outcomes as we age. Year-round, OHNEP enhances the nursing profession’s interprofessional role in oral health and its links to overall health in both academic and clinical settings. Adopting healthy habits and lifestyle changes - regular exercise, a nutritious diet, improved sleep patterns - are ways we can overcome health physical and mental health challenges that occur with age.

As we age, physical activity helps us attain our goals, maintain our functioning, and promote comfort. The videos on this web page include strength, balance, and flexibility exercises, which can help prevent falls and hip fractures. In addition, routine exercise can help prevent heart disease, reduce arthritis pain, and improve mood, sleep and blood sugar control, in addition to many other health promoting effects. If you prefer not to follow a video, an instruction sheet (PDF) provides several daily exercises appropriate for older adults who can stand with minimal or no support.

The National Resource Center on LGBTQ+ Aging, a program of SAGE, is the country's first and only technical assistance resource center focused on improving the quality of services and supports offered to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender older adults, families and caregivers. Established in 2010 through a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Resource Center on LGBTQ+ Aging provides training, technical assistance and educational resources to aging providers, LGBTQ+ organizations and LGBTQ+ older adults.
