Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education: Compendium of Five Case Studies: Lessons for Interprofessional Teamwork in Education and Workplace Learning Environments 2011-2016.

The Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education enlisted the expertise of authors, educators, clinical champions, trainees/residents, change agents and policy makers from nursing, medicine, social work, pharmacy, psychology, physical therapy and other professions, but all seeking improvement strategies for interprofessional, patient-centered clinical education and methods to better prepare health professions team leaders of the future. This peer-reviewed compendium provides tools and resources to help prepare professionals for interprofessional collaborative practice intended to improve care for Veterans and the nation.

This NEXUS coordinated and peer reviewed document provides a foreword by Barbara Brandt, PhD.  Dr. Brandt states that this work tells “a different story (of collaborative and interprofessional clinical education), one rarely told in traditional academic venues…the deeper story behind the story”….“we have the opportunity to learn about context and developmental issues from a national large-scale complex adaptive systems perspective”.  

VA encourages use and adaptations of this work to support complex, but important challenges of integrating education into the interprofessional clinical workplace. Annette Gardner, PHD, MPH (UCSF) and other CoEPCE authors located in VA medical centers in Boise Idaho; Cleveland, Ohio; San Francisco, California; Seattle, Washington; and West Haven, Connecticut worked together to overview the project and tell the story behind five unique examples of integrated interprofessional curriculum to support the clinical education workplace.  These case studies align with the project’s domains of shared decision-making, sustained relationships, interprofessional collaboration and performance improvement with the purpose of “fostering transformation of clinical education by preparing graduates of health professions programs to work in and lead patient centered interprofessional teams.”  The future is now!
