The new Oral Health Across the Lifespan Module, created and funded by the Oral Health Nursing Education & Practice (OHNEP) program and the National Interprofessional Initiative on Oral Health (NIIOH), is one of a 15 module series produced by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR).

The module introduces learners to the Healthy People 2020 Oral Health goals and objectives as well as strategies for achieving them.

The module has 5 parts:

Introduction and Oral-Systemic Health
Oral Health For Pregnant Women and Their Newborns
Oral Health in Childhood
Oral Health and Older Adults
Oral Health Literacy

Each part includes supplemental learning materials, such as test questions, discussion questions, and teaching-learning resources.

After completing the Oral Health Module, learners will be able to:

Discuss issues related to oral health disparities, access, and health outcomes
Define mechanisms that connect oral health with overall health
Discuss health conditions and medications that are risk factors for oral health problems
Discuss interprofessional oral health core competencies and how they can be integrated into health care

Dear Andrea,

Thank you for posting a comment about the newly released HP2020 module, Oral Health Across the Lifespan produced by APTR and co-sponsored with OHNEP and NIIOH. Since the module is "hot off the press", as yet we have not had a large number of documented users, However, the aim of the module is for it to address an often neglected population health issue, oral health, that is one of the HP2020 10 Leading Health Topics! Following publication of 2 IOM Reports in 2011, highlighting oral health access and disparity issues and identifying the need to involve the primary care workforce in addressing the problem, HRSA convened an Expert Panel to develop interprofessional oral health core competencies so that nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other professionals, in addressing oral health needs across the lifespan. The HRSA Report, Integration of Oral Health and Primary Care Practice, was released in April 2014. So...this module is designed to be a curricular resource for health professionals that can be woven into existing curriculum/courses to address this important population health issue. For example, for the public health or social work curriculum, oral health becomes a population health issue for a course focus on children, pregnant women, older adults. In a nurse practitioner, medical, or physician assistant curriculum, the first module on the oral-systemic connection might be more relevant when teaching about diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer. Basically, the entire module can be assigned or the sub-modules can be assigned individually according to a course focus. Continuing Education contact hours will be available in December, so it is very applicable for practicing professionals or faculty development. The resources for each module, the test questions, the discussion questions, the out of class activities are designed to advance development of the IPEC competencies across the professions. So the modules can be used to provide preparation for interprofessional classroom, clinical simulation or live clinical experiences, including service learning experiences. As you can see the presenters represent an interprofessional team so we like to think that we walk the IP walk with this module. Excellent package of five elements representing the important link between oral health care interprofessional collaborative practice and the relevance of everyone who is involved in health care consciously thinking about these connections if we are to accomplish the Triple Aim. Would LOVE to hear how folks incorporate all or part of these modules into IPE/CP programs across the country. Very very nice. Thank you
