The purpose of this paper is to outline the theoretical underpinnings, objectives, and methodology of a national study of geriatric health care teams in the Veterans Affairs (VA) system. This project, funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) from June 1991 through November 1994, was designed to:

  1. identify factors that influence the quality of team functioning
  2. examine the effect quality functioning has on job stress among team members
  3. explore differences among types of teams and team members from different disciplines/ professions.
