This article describes a qualitative study on eliciting patient-centered goals for dementia care that used focus groups of people with early-stage dementia and dementia caregivers. Although a variety of measures have been developed that assess control of behavioral symptoms and caregiver outcomes, these may not capture everything that may be important to patients and their caregivers as they face the medical, behavioral, and social consequences of dementia. Goals of dementia care for both patients and caregivers are described.
