This editorial is a commentary on Health Professionals for a new century: transforming education to strengthen health systems in an interdependent world.

The authors write: "The paper enhances the importance of interprofessional education, moving beyond preoccupations with logistics and barriers to ways in which to bring the professions and learners together, building on a growing fund of experience worldwide. We call on professional accreditation bodies to include competencies in interprofessional education and collaborative practice within their validation, qualification, and revalidation requirements with the aim of achieving the new professionalism for which the sixth proposed reform calls. In conjunction with these actions, more resources are needed for assessment and research to build on the growing evidence base about what works, why, how, and in what context."
