This course provides an overview of the field of palliative care, including a self-assessment on basic palliative care concepts. The course also provides overviews and resources for each of the eight domains of palliative care (defined by the National Consensus Project) to be used as clinical practice guidelines for quality palliative care.

Introduction to Palliative Care was designed to prepare students who will be participating in clinical rotations that will involve palliative care. It can be used by any health care professional who is interested in learning about that specialty area, the role of interprofessional teamwork, and the specific domains and guidelines that comprise palliative care.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this course, you will be able to:

• Articulate a definition of ‘palliative care’ that reflects standard definitions of the term as well as your own individual and professional perspective

• Discuss the rationale for and scope of palliative care services

• Apply a basic understanding of the key concepts of the eight domains of palliative care in clinical learning experiences

• Articulate the distinctions that characterize rural palliative care as compared to palliative care services in larger hospitals and/or urban locations.
