Continuous quality improvement in health professions education
Submitted by Madeline H. Schmitt on Oct 17, 2014 - 2:27pm CDT
This editorial calls attention to a major U.S. interprofessional initiative, the Interdisciplinary Professional Educational Collaborative (IPEC), designed to introduce continuous quality improvement into interdisciplinary health professions education. Continuous quality improvement thinking and methods are now widespread in U.S. health care delivery. The Institute for Health Improvement (IHI) has been central to this development. Increasing awareness that the education of health professionals did not prepare them to function in a health care delivery system, emphasizing continuous improvement of care in an outcomes focused environment led IHI to develop IPEC with the support of the federal Bureau of Health Professions/Health Resources and Services Administration.
