PURPOSE:

Physician assistant (PA) students need exposure to a wide range of clinical settings including long-term care (LTC); however, finding consistent educational LTC opportunities is difficult. This article describes a unique, replicable, educational opportunity for PA students to get exposure to the LTC setting by working with a consultant pharmacist.

METHODS:

Pairs of students spent 4 hours with the pharmacist, reviewing and copresenting two to three patient charts. Students completed a questionnaire that asked them to describe what they had learned.

A cross-sectional survey examining the extent to which interprofessional education is used to teach nursing, pharmacy and medical students in Australian and New Zealand universities

The current status of interprofessional education (IPE) in Australian and New Zealand universities is largely unexamined despite its generally acknowledged benefit. Data are also limited about the use of IPE in teaching medication safety to nursing, pharmacy and medical students. For this reason a web-based cross-sectional survey was used to gather information from Australian and New Zealand universities offering nursing, pharmacy or medical programs. Responses were received from 31 of the 43 (72%) target universities.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the interprofessional SDM training program "Fit for SDM" in medical rehabilitation, which was implemented in two steps: (1) university staff trained providers in executive positions as trainers and (2) the providers trained their staff.

Evaluation of the learning experiences afforded through multipractice learning in primary care: a project in the development of a multiprofessional learning organisation

This mixed methods study used questionnaires and focus groups to evaluate a multiprofessional learning environment in which undergraduate pharmacy students were attached to general practices to learn alongside general practice specialist trainees (GPSTRs). All 27 of the first cohort of third-year undergraduate pharmacists elected to take part in the study.

The growing popularity of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), of which estimated 38% of adults in the United States used in 2007, has engendered changes in medical school curricula to increase students' awareness of it. Exchange programs between conventional medical schools and CAM institutions are recognized as an effective method of interprofessional education.

Interprofessional care may provide some answers to the challenge of scarce healthcare resources, through the utilization of the expertise of various professionals to improve evidence-based care. This was a two-year programme in primary care, where doctor and nurse pairs acted as intrinsic facilitators creating and implementing local guidelines and encouraging multiprofessional teamwork. The effect of implementation was studied by auditing professional opinion change, blood pressure, serum lipid and HbA1C levels.

Interprofessional relationships and communication in primary palliative care: impact of the Gold Standards Framework

BACKGROUND:

High quality end-of-life care in the community is achieved with effective multidisciplinary teamwork, interprofessional communication between GPs and district nurses, and early referral of patients to district nurses. These aspects of palliative care are highlighted in the Gold Standards Framework, a programme recently established in UK primary care.

AIM:

To investigate the extent to which the framework influences interprofessional relationships and communication, and to compare GPs' and nurses' experiences.

To extract meaning from registered nurses' lived experiences in their professional collaboration with orthopaedic surgeons.

BACKGROUND:

Interprofessional collaboration between registered nurses and orthopaedic surgeons faces challenges on many levels. The literature offers theories on collaboration, but reality seems to be in conflict with theory, especially in somatic hospitals. Little empirical research on lived experience has been conducted in these settings.

BACKGROUND:

Clinical placements have been traditionally offered on a profession specific basis, and as a result, we have a good understanding of salient issues related to their development and delivery. We know less about the planning and implementation of collaborative clinical placements. Aims: This paper presents key findings from a qualitative study that explored the collaborative processes connected to an interprofessional planning group who created and implemented a clinical placement for medical, nursing and allied health students.

Team meetings in specialist palliative care: asking questions as a strategy within interprofessional interaction

In this article, I explore what happens when specialist palliative care staff meet together to discuss patients under their care. Many studies (e.g., Atkinson) have discussed how health care practitioners in various settings use rhetorical strategies when presenting cases in situations such as ward rounds and team meetings. Strategies for arguing and persuading are central to medical practice in the interprofessional context.
