Teenagers and young adults with cancer face significant challenges throughout their cancer journey. Psychosocial issues are considered to be among the most challenging faced by patients, families and healthcare professionals. Staff from Coventry University met with a group of international experts in Bangkok in 2006 to discuss the specific educational needs of various members of the healthcare team who care for this group of patients. Key concepts discussed there became a reality when this online, interprofessional course was accredited and commenced in February 2007.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a theory analysis of shared decision making (SDM) conceptual models and determine the extent to which the models are relevant to interprofessional collaboration in clinical practice.

METHODS: Theory analysis of SDM models identified from three systematic reviews and personal files. Eligible publications: model of SDM; described concepts with relational statements. Two independently appraised models.

Strategic approach to building research capacity in inter-professional education and collaboration

The purpose of this paper is to describe the process used to initiate research capacity building in a community of practice (CoP) focused on the research and evaluation of inter-professional education and collaboration. This CoP, composed of members from across Canada, is a committee of the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC), a national collaborative that aims to advance inter-professional education and collaboration in healthcare. The committee mapped recommendations that emerged from a number of CIHC reports onto a research capacity building framework.

It is widely assumed that interprofessional learning (IPL) impacts positively on interprofessional working (IPW) in health and social care. However, there is no clear evidence that pre-qualifying IPL improves service delivery. The direct effect of pre-qualifying IPL on IPW and service delivery is difficult to demonstrate; researchers must rely on professionals' self-report in this regard. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study in which semi-structured interviews were used to collect individuals' views and perceptions about pre-qualifying IPL as preparation for practice.
