BACKGROUND: Although teamwork is known to optimise good health care, organisational arrangements and funding models can foster, discourage, or preclude functional teamworking. Despite a new, enhanced population-based funding system for primary care in New Zealand, bringing new opportunities for more collaborative practice, fully implemented healthcare teamwork remains elusive.

AIM: To explore perceptions of interprofessional relationships, teamwork, and collaborative patient care in New Zealand primary care practice.

DESIGN OF STUDY: Qualitative.

BACKGROUND: Many measurement scales for interprofessional collaboration are developed for one health professional group, typically nurses. Evaluating interprofessional collaborative relationships can benefit from employing a measurement scale suitable for multiple health provider groups, including physicians and other health professionals. To this end, the paper begins development of a new interprofessional collaboration measurement scale designed for use with nurses, physicians, and other professionals practicing in contemporary acute care settings.

Respect is important in the creation of a positive perioperative work environment and effective OR teams. Low scores for respect in the OR on an employee opinion survey and responses on a more customized survey that examined issues associated with respect prompted leaders at the University Health Network to undertake a multiyear organizational strategy to address respect and quality of worklife initiatives. An interprofessional quality of worklife task force convened to create an action plan to address the outcomes of the surveys.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important contributor to ensuring interprofessional collaboration and, ultimately, improving the quality of health care. However, there is a gap in available resources on critical success factors for implementing intentional interprofessional learning experiences. The Interprofessional Collaborative Organizational Map and Preparedness Assessment (IP-COMPASS) is a quality improvement framework that provides a structured process to help health care organizations become better prepared to offer IPE.

The purpose of this pilot study was to test an educational intervention about EOLD for IP teams at a long-term care facility and a hospice.

Interprofessional care may provide some answers to the challenge of scarce healthcare resources, through the utilization of the expertise of various professionals to improve evidence-based care. This was a two-year programme in primary care, where doctor and nurse pairs acted as intrinsic facilitators creating and implementing local guidelines and encouraging multiprofessional teamwork. The effect of implementation was studied by auditing professional opinion change, blood pressure, serum lipid and HbA1C levels.
