NIHAN’s Geriatric Seminar Series provides free health care education and resources to the geriatric community, by presenting topics related to the 4M’s, an age-friendly health care framework—What Matters, Medication, Mobility, and Mentation. The goal of the 15-session NIHAN Geriatric Series is to foster healthy aging for old adults, in order to create a more healthy and age-friendly geriatric community in Nevada.

This series session will help you gain insight on the complexities of Geriatric Substance Abuse and the necessary treatment for this population. Individuals will gain knowledge on the signs/symptoms of a Substance use disorder by understanding the terminology and the physical/emotional/cognitive presentations aligning with such disorder. Individuals will learn the risk factors that contribute to substance abuse problems by understanding the effects of early risks and current days risks, as well as understanding the protective factors developed throughout life that can prevent the onset of substance use problems and/or disorders. Individuals will learn treatment protocols for this population by understanding the necessity of medical evaluations, routine screening, resources/access to treatment, and allocation of support systems for the client and caregiver alike.

Insights on the complexities of Geriatric Substance Abuse
Risk & protective factors for substance abuse problems to arise
Treatment protocols to treat substance abuse and early prevention
