This lecture (41:58 minutes) given by Andrea Levin, PharmD, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy, discusses safe medication use in older adults in order to maximize therapeutic benefit and reduce polypharmacy and adverse drug events. By the end of this lecture, learners should be able to: (1) describe the purpose of Beers Criteria; (2) describe the problems resulting from polypharmacy (e.g. prescribing cascade); (3) identify medications that can be considered for deprescribing; (4) identify medications that can may be underutilized in the elderly; and (5) describe adverse drug effects affecting elderly patients associated from inappropriately prescribed medications.
