We are developing milestones for a new interprofessional collaboration competency domain for medical students at our institution. I think the originator of this question might find the work ongoing at the University of Arizona-Phoenix campus related to a milestone approach to establishing competencies, including interprofessional competencies, in their medical school curriculum very useful if she is not already aware of this effort. I attended the webinar Christa spoke of: On Tuesday, November 12 from 12-1 pm, Jill Thistlewthwaite, MBBS, MMeEd, PhD, and Nawal Luftiyya, PhD, FACE conducted a journal club webinar through the national center entitled, “Competencies and Frameworks in Interprofessional Education: A Comparative Analysis.” The webinar proceedings as well as question and answer session was audiorecorded and should be availble from Nexus website. I found it very informative. Competencies and capabilities were terms discussed. Dr. Thistlethwaite discussed four IPE frameworks, one being the IPEC core competencies. I found the webinar to be very useful in understanding frameworks, competencies and the realization of the need for robust assessment measures for interprofessional practice rather than uniprofessional assessment standards.

Thanks for all the responses to my post! I really appreciate the very useful discussion and resources. I should clarify a few things in response, including terminology. With our major curriculum overhaul underway, our medical school is adding "interprofessional collaboration" as a competency domain, in addition to the longstanding 6 domains (patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice).
To David's point, moving forward we are using the term “graduation milestones” rather than “competencies” to reflect the notion that these are stepping stones along the way toward achievement of the competencies expected for a practicing physician, many of which require additional training in residency.
Our interprofessional graduation milestones will be based upon the 4 IPEC competency domains. Two related issues we are beginning to tackle:
1. What are the smaller "sub-milestones" that students should achieve at defined points in time during their pre-licensure training, and that demonstrate their development toward becoming "collaboration ready" upon graduation?
2. What are the assessment tools that measure these smaller milestones, or development? (sorry for some reason I cannot access Alan's article at the moment, but looks very intriguing!)

We have utilized different terminology to ask and address this quesion. Given the IPEC competiences and the ACGME Milestones, our question has been to define and describe the develomentally apporprate descriptions of "collaboration ready" for a medcial school graduate. Developing "competency" is an ongoing process and will be improved across residency. We do not feel that the medical student at graduation can be expected to demonstrate competence acorss all 37 IPEC competencies. However, they can be collaboraiton ready and have basic knowledge and skills in each of the domains and many of the IPEC competencies.

This is a very important conversation in interprofessional education and collaborative practice today. Some confuse it with the ACGME "milestone" focus -- but this question and topic are really about the development of a profession over time and specifically interprofessional knowledge, skills and attitudes for and in practice. How can we prepare pre-professional students to work collaboratively in practice? And, how are current health professionals supported in these skills? People are starting to grapple with this.
Check out the work at Virginia Commonwealth University : Dow, A.W., Diaz Granados, D., Mazmanian, P.E., Retchin, S.M. An exploratory study of an assessment too derived from the competencies of the interprofessional education collaborative. Journal of Interprofessional Care, 28(4), 299-304. They have been working together to think this through.
I also know Scott Reeves, Editor of JIC, and Susan Wagner, of the University of Toronto, are also working on this area.

We are in the same process - really wanting to have an observational tool that aligns with IPEC competency domains. In the meantime, we have been exploring the new Entrustable Professional Activities for descriptors of pre-entrustable and entrustable interprofessional behaviors; they might help inform the process but are fairly generic at this time. I thought I heard that someone is working on a tool that aligns with IPEC that hasn't been published yet, but not sure about that.

You posted a really interesting question. Is your institution developing this competency in addition to already utilizing the IPEC competencies (or a similar set of competencies)? Would you be willing to share some of the initial ideas that you are working with to get the conversation started?
Are other AHC schools at your institution engaging in interprofesisonal education and collaborative practice? If so, it might be worthwhile sitting at a roundtable with them to gather/share ideas during the development stage; including practicing providers/clinicians/staff in the discussions might also be helpful. Similar to the IPEC competencies, an interprofessional collaboration competency domain sounds as if it has the potential to be applied to all healthcare professional roles found within the pre- and post-licensure learner populations.
On Tuesday, November 12 from 12-1 pm, Jill Thistlewthwaite, MBBS, MMeEd, PhD, and Nawal Luftiyya, PhD, FACE will be conducting a journal club through the national center entitled, “Competencies and Frameworks in Interprofessional Education: A Comparative Analysis.” There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the session.
