Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a six week academic enrichment program sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for first and second year college students interested in medicine or dentistry, and who are underrepresented or from rural and underserved areas of the country. Each summer we bring 80 students to the University of Louisville’s Health Sciences Center where we provide free housing, meals and a stipend while they participate in a tuition-free 3 hour science enrichment course. The scholars are also given many opportunities to interact with current medical and dental students as well as the faculty and staff of the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.
Students who meet the following criteria may be eligible:
• Be a Freshman or Sophomore college student OR a community college student
• Be from an economically disadvantaged background; a racial or ethnic group that has been historically underrepresented in medicine and dentistry; or a part of the country where residents have been historically underrepresented in medicine and dentistry
• Be a US citizen or have Permanent Residency Status
• Have an overall 2.5 GPA
I would be happy to provide further information to those students who are interested. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
