Dr. Shunk, board certified in internal medicine, is the physician Co-Director of the Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education and the Associate Chief of Staff for Education at the San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC) as well as Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center. She and her team develop strategies to improve interprofessional, team-based health professions education in patient-centered primary care. Dr. Shunk has been a primary care provider and clinician educator at the SFVAMC and UCSF for the past 18 years.

Dr. Shunk previously served as Associate Program Director of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program. During her tenure, she participated in and facilitated the Johns Hopkins Faculty Development Course.

She has served on numerous committees focusing on trainee education at UCSF, SFVAMC and the VA nationally including the national VA Academic Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) committee. The committee produced “Academic PACT: A blueprint for primary care redesign in academic practice settings.” She has received several teaching awards, including the Calvin L. Chou PRIME Teaching Award. In 2014, she was awarded the California Society of General Internal Medicine Leader in GIM Award at the California regional meeting. Dr. Shunk received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She attended University of Chicago Internal Medicine Residency and transferred to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center to complete her residency and her Chief Resident year. She is currently a Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCSF.
