Nisia Thornton has been working as a staff RN on UC Medical Center’s Neuroscience Institute 4 North East acute care floor since 2009. She obtained her CNRN in late 2011, and will be sitting for her Stroke Certified RN exam next week! Her previous professional and academic experience includes a Master’s in Education, Bachelor’s in History/Political Science and Nursing; 12 years high school instruction in English language, literature & composition, public speaking and drama; Over-the-Rhine nonprofit administration; work with those living with severe mental illness and risk of homelessness at Tender Mercies; skilled nursing facility regulatory compliance, admissions and nursing department clinical coordination; and, nonprofit PR & development. She continues to be active in precepting nursing students and RNs new to neuroscience, contributing neuroscience articles and nursing education presentations toward the clinical education & professional advancement of nurses. Nisia follows neuroscience, nursing, & global health issues via the American Assoc of Neurosciences Nurses, Twitter, Facebook, and various blogs and websites. Her neuroscience interests include traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the homeless population, high energy blast-induced TBI in the combat theater, the molecular neurochemistry of stroke, RN utilization of mobile technology and 3-D modeling software for instructional use and virtual neurosurgery. Nisia has started coursework at UC toward nursing educator certification, and upon initiation of a BSN to DNP program at UC, plans to work toward that terminal degree. Nisia and her partner share their lives with a rescued Shih Tzu, four cats, two kittens, and the deer, raccoons, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, cardinals, sparrows, wrens, hawks and others who inhabit their home in Campbell County, KY. A skilled amateur photographer and artist, and probably undiagnosed ADD with hyperfocus, Nisia enjoys music ranging from Nine Inch Nails to Johann Sebastian Bach, counts herself as “Cumberbatched” and as a child wanted to join NASA and/or become the Science Officer on Star Trek’s USS Enterprise.
