Dr. Dentato is the Associate Dean for Research and Professor in the School of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. His research and scholarship focuses on LGBTQ+ health and health disparities, substance use and addiction disorders, stress theory, sexual risk behavior, HIV/AIDS and interprofessional education. In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Dentato has over twenty-five years of community-based and consultant experience including clinical, administrative and policy work throughout his tenure in New York City, Miami and Chicago.
Dr. Dentato is currently an Ambassador at the Institute for Transformative Interprofessional Education (I-TIE) at Loyola University Chicago. He is the former Co-Chair of the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE), Council on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (CSOGIE); as well as former President of the Board of Directors for Test Positive Aware Network (TPAN) in Chicago.
Dr. Dentato and his colleague Dr. John Orwat have successfully received a number of federal training grants through SAMHSA for SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment); HRSA for Behavioral Health Workforce Expansion Training; and HRSA for Opioid Workforce Expansion Training, among others. In addition to provided significant student stipends, these projects work collaboratively with students and faculty in the schools of social work, nursing, and medicine, as well as the Institute for Transformative Interprofessional Education (I-TIE) at Loyola, and many community based partners throughout Chicago.
