Overview

University District Street Medicine is an innovative project that has been grounded in commnity support and guidance from the start. University District Street Medicine will provide low-income and homeless individuals in the University District with access to medical and social services within an interdiscipinary model. By engaging with individuals on-the-ground, students will begin establishing rapport and continue to assess community needs. By providing education surrounding communication with health providers and available resources, students will begin to empower patients on increasing advocacy and communication with healthcare and social service providers.

Objectives

This project will provide students the opportunity to engage with patients in the University District neighborhood. This will provide students from multiple disciplines an excellent opportunity to engage with the underserved residents of the neighborhood that University of Washignton resides within. Some specific skills that students will be able to utilize will be motivational interviewing, resources education and referral, vital sign acquisition and history taking.

 A secondary goal is to provide the University District neighborhood with an outreach-     driven, community-informed, interdisciplinary clinic model. UDSM also plans to continue to "roll out" this project to include clinical space and partnership at UW Roosevelt.

The final goal is to provide the opportunity for students from Medicine, Social Work, Physical Therapy and Nursing to work together in collaborative, interdisciplinary teams, learning from one another about multiple professional approaches to patient engagement, patient navigation and community partnership and collaboration, both with existing community service providers and the residents themselves.
