The College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida is comprised of more than 1800 students from six disciplines:  Nursing, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and, Speech-Language Pathology. Fifty one percent of the CNHS faculty are minority and culturally diverse and they serve an equally culturally and linguistically diverse student body.  FIU is a federally designated Hispanic and Minority serving institution (59.5% Hispanic;  12% Black) and is designated a Carnegie High research activity university.

Our Interest in Interprofessional Practice and Education:

As a HRSA grantee we launched the Technology Interprofessional Culturally Competent Education (T.I.P.C.E.) Program at our College of Nursing in Health Sciences at Florida International University in Miami, Florida.  Our grant purpose is to:

Modify, implement and evaluate of primary care family nurse practitioner program by incorporating culturally competent technological interprofessional education and practice activities.

This purpose is being accomplished by engaging students from the FNP program, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and athletic training in various innovative technologically advanced interprofessional activities.

 

Signature Programs and Activities:

Our Key Activities include:

1-Web Portal (via Blackboard LMS):  where faculty and students are oriented to technology in healthcare and simulation guidelines and pre-simulation activities; students participate in asynchronous interprofessional graduate learning modules and engage in discussion forums and use WIKI to discuss a patient cases.  The portal also has a faculty only resource center which contains evidenced based guidelines for use of technoloy in healthcare education and so forth.

2-  SIMULATION: Students from various disciplines participate in simulation cases that incorporate interprofessional and culturally competent objectives.

3-  VIRTUAL CARE & STUDENT MONITORING:  A custom telehealth unit was developed and students will be monitored virtually by nursing faculty while providing care to patients in the community.
