The Western Region Public Health Training Center at the University of Arizona’s Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, in collaboration with the UA College of Nursing creates the University of Arziona SANE program to expand sexual assault response services in rural areas of Region 9 (Arizona, Nevada, California, Hawaii, and the United States Affiliated Pacific Islands).
Main Program Objectives
- Provide funding and support to train and certify nurses in Region 9 to be Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs)
- Provide financial support to take an online SANE course through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)
- Facilitate the clinical training necessary to be a competent SANE
- Cover the cost of the certification exam
- Financially support preceptors to work with nurses while they learn clinical skills
- Financially support standardized patients to help nurses practice clinical skills
- Increase the capacity to provide services at rural hospitals and clinics
- Purchase supplies needed to provide quality exams
- Provide equipment such as colposcopes and cameras to a few locations
- Create an online support app for SANEs that addresses Secondary Traumatic Stress and burn-out
- Increase overall awareness of the prevalence of sexual assault, available resources, and service locations
- Create news articles
- Work with local coalitions
- Build partnerships between rural and urban areas to facilitate training and capacity building
- Publish a peer-reviewed paper
