Dr. Mitchellhas been involved with surgical simulation at OHSU since 2007 and is currently the Assistant Director of surgical simulation at VirtuOHSU. Her current academic focus is surgical education, surgical skills lab training and surgical simulation, and her research focuses primarily in these areas. Dr. Mitchell has received nine grants in support of her work to teach and study simulation in vascular surgery at both a regional and national level. Dr. Mitchell was awarded a travelling Fellowship in 2008 from the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) to meet with and learn from world leaders in surgical simulation. She was recently awarded a SVS Presidential Citation for her efforts which focused on introducing medical students and general residents - through simulation - to the vascular surgery specialty, including initiating a simulation and educational research program for over 300 attendees at the SVS annual meetings in 2011 and 2012. As the current chair of the Association for Program Directors in Vascular Surgery Education Committee, she is responsible for developing a national vascular surgical skills lab and simulation curriculum.
