Bruce E. Spivey, M.D., trained as an ophthalmologist and medical educator. He has worked extensively to enhance ophthalmic education and eye care nationally and internationally. Dr. Spivey was President of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) from 2006 to 2014 and served as ICO Secretary-General from 1994 to 2006. During that time, ICO membership increased 150 percent, the budget more than 100 times and educational programmatic activity even more. The ICO’s World Ophthalmology Congress had 4000 registrants in 1986 in Rome and nearly 20,000 in 2014 in Tokyo. Dr. Spivey served as an ophthalmology departmental chairman at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco for 17 years, and was the Chief Executive of CPMC for 16 years. He was the Executive Vice President and founding CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for 17 years, from 1976 to 1992, and the founding CEO of multi-health care systems for 15 years, in San Francisco, Chicago (Northwestern University) and New York (Columbia and Cornell Universities). Dr. Spivey is the recipient of numerous medals and awards in ophthalmology and medicine including the Jules Francois Gold Medal of the International Council of Ophthalmology, the Howe Medal of the American Ophthalmological Society and Bernardo Streiff Medal of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis. His past positions include President of the American Board of Medical Specialties, President of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, President of the Society of Medical Administrators, President of the American Ophthalmological Society, and member of the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee. He has given over 40 named lectures and published over 140 refereed publications. He serves as a trustee of Coe College, Pacific Vision Foundation, the International Council of Ophthalmology Foundation, the U.S.-China Educational Institute, Helen Keller International, and other not-for-profit organizations. He is a founding trustee of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company.
