Series Description:

The Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase is a free webinar series from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. The Seminar Showcase features the highest-rated peer-reviewed seminars offered during last year’s annual conference, the Nexus Summit 2024, and covers topics drawn from the Nexus Summit 2024 themes, presenting this excellent content to our entire audience for the first time. Offered between February - June 2025, the Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase will provide an opportunity to learn from, with, and about the work being done to improve practice, education and health for those we serve.

Abstract:

This seminar is designed to share the efforts of five Big 10 Universities in Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin in advancing interprofessional education (IPE) in the clinical learning environment (CLE), with the intent to spur application and creativity across institutions nationally. Initiatives will be compared and contrasted conceptually to maximize relevance and utility for attendees, including initiative design and implementation, organizational level overseeing initiatives, model of integration across academic programs in the context of clinical placements, evaluation tools and outcomes, successes and challenges, and next steps. Models include both in-person and asynchronous opportunities to grow in interprofessional competency in the CLE. Initiatives involve a broad range of professions including Chaplaincy, Dentistry, Dietetics, Law, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Public Health, Respiratory Therapy, and Social Work. The session includes a combination of interactive collaboration and independent generation of IPE constructs to support real-time application within one’s institutional context. Presenters and attendees will learn with, from, and about each other to catalyze action and shift IPE further along the learning continuum into practice.

This presentation directly addresses the summit theme Preparing Students for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice by describing the similarities and differences in experiential IPE design, outcomes, and next steps across multiple institutions committed to advancing training for collaborative practice occurring authentically in the clinical learning environment.

After attending this session, learners will be able to:

  1. Analyze similarities and differences in the constructs of interprofessional education initiatives in the clinical learning environment as presented by five Big 10 institutions.
  2. Apply the presented interprofessional education models in the clinical learning environment to one’s own institutional context to spur creative thinking regarding existing frameworks, challenges, and opportunities.
  3. Generate actionable next steps to advance interprofessional education in the clinical learning environment through partnerships across academic programs and with other institutions and community partners to maximize authenticity in learning.

Participants will generate actionable next steps to advance interprofessional education in the clinical learning environment to support real-time application within one’s institutional context. Consideration of partnerships across academic programs and with other institutions and community partners is encouraged to maximize authenticity in learning. Presenters and attendees will learn with, from, and about each other to catalyze action and shift IPE further along the learning continuum into practice.
