Beyond the Classroom: Designing Shared Medical Appointments as a Workplace Learning Activity for Interprofessional Curricula in Primary Care Education
Submitted by Laural Traylor, MSW on Feb 8, 2018 - 10:25am CST
Many clinicians associate “curriculum” with traditional classroom or simulation-based education. In these settings, goals and objectives guide the instruction, materials, and activities of the session and teachers control much of the learning experience.
In contrast, clinical teachers find it difficult to plan a "curriculum" for dynamic, highly variable workplace learning environments. In this presentation, faculty will explain how to think strategically about a curriculum for the workplace, using examples of curricula for shared medical appointments. Faculty for this presentation will address:
· A curricular framework for workplace learning in VA Primary Care
· Concepts to include: orientation, participation, sequencing, scaffolding and entrustment
· Curricula examples such as shared medical appointments, diabetes management and pain management
