Topic:

Getting to Know Each Other

Overview:

With the fast-moving healthcare delivery redesign and the call for educational reform coupled with the desire to maximize resources and minimize duplication, South Dakota built a collaborative approach across multiple education and healthcare institutions in a state that spans urban and rural settings.  The development of the South Dakota Interprofessional Practice and Education Collaborative (SD-IPEC), formed between existing and new partners, required commitment, energy, and trust-building.

Workshop participants will learn how the statewide, multi-institutional SD-IPEC evolved. This session will include a discussion on the SD-IPEC roadmap, hurdles encountered and approaches to the innovative solutions. This workshop will provide practical tips for others who are seeking to build unique collaborative partnerships between practice, education, and community partners. A review of problem-solving and innovative solutions required to move the SD-IPEC forward can provide a roadmap for others who are seeking to build unique collaborative partnerships.  Examples of innovative approaches that make a difference in achieving learning and health outcomes will be presented. SD-IPEC foundational documents including purpose, vision, team responsibilities, goals and outcomes, partner MOAs, and process steps will be shared as enduring materials.

Learner Objectives:

  1.  Identify strategies to create a sustainable statewide Nexus.

  2.  Evaluate how lessons learned in the creation and development of the statewide SD-IPEC can be applied to their own setting to:

    1. Foster relationships between multiple educational and health care institutions to advance interprofessional practice and education;

    2. Build infrastructure for education and health systems to work together more effectively to educate current and future health professionals in both urban and rural settings across institutions; and

  3. Develop a collaborative action plan to address priority needs by blending diverse perspectives and creating innovation through problem-solving.
