Content Description:

The Oral Health Nursing Education and Practice (OHNEP) Program is a workforce-redesign initiative committed to advancing the integration of oral health into the nursing profession in educational and clinical settings. This national initiative aims to develop a nursing workforce equipped with the interprofessional oral health competencies to recognize the importance of oral health promotion and disease prevention as an integral component of nursing practice. OHNEP supports the collaborative of nurse practitioners, midwives, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses as key stakeholders on interprofessional teams across the health system that promote national efforts to expand oral health access, reduce oral health disparities, and improve oral health and overall health outcomes across the lifespan.

The mission of the OHNEP Program is to:

  • Implement and evaluate the impact of a replicable interprofessional model for integrating interprofessional oral health competencies through faculty development and curriculum integration in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs as well as “best practices” in clinical settings
  • Disseminate its interprofessional oral health model and best practices nationally
  • Develop a nursing workforce that is knowledgeable about the relationship between oral and systemic health
  • Develop a nursing workforce that is collaborative-practice ready to integrate interprofessional oral health competencies into their clinical practice

OHNEP advocates, educates, creates and promotes resources that primary care clinicians can use to improve the quality of oral health care in their patients. The OHNEP website serves as a knowledge center and portal for best practices.

Tools and resources found on the OHNEP website include:

  • The Interprofessional Oral Health Faculty Toolkit, an innovative, web-based, open source product intended to facilitate the integration of oral-systemic health content and interprofessional clinical competencies into associate, baccalaureate, and master’s-level nursing and midwifery curricula. The Toolkit, developed by the Competencies, and either the NONPF Core Competencies for Nurse Practitioners, the ACNM Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice, the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice, or the NLN Outcomes and Competencies for Graduates of Practical/Vocational, Diploma, Baccalaureate Programs in Nursing.
  • Publications from OHNEP and interprofessional colleagues, including the seminal article Putting the Mouth Back in the Head: HEENT to HEENOT, published in the American Journal of Public Health, that advocates for an increase in interprofessional oral health workforce capacity in order to decrease oral health disparities.
  • Healthy People 2020 modules that introduce interprofessional learners from medical, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy and public health backgrounds, to the Healthy People 2020 oral health goals and strategies to achieving them.
  • Oral Health Patient Facts, developed in partnership between the OHNEP Program and the American College of Physicians, are patient-focused educational resources disseminated in primary care offices to help improve oral health literacy.
  • Webinars, focused on clinical issues and strategies specific to improving oral health, presented by interprofessional panels of experts, including the 4-part geriatric oral health series.
  • Interprofessional case studies that foster interprofessional student teams to create a collaborative care plan for patients with oral and systemic health needs.
  • Interprofessional oral health blended learning modules focused on oral health care for pregnant women and their babies.
  • Interprofessional education videos, including MedEd Portal presentations on mechanically ventilated adults and those with Parkinson’s Disease, and PowerPoint presentations that delineate the role of interprofessional healthcare providers in promoting oral and overall health.
  • All 4 Oral Health Blog, social media channels and e-newsletters that engage national and international stakeholders in raising professional and consumer oral health awareness.

  1. Nursing and other primary care participants will advance the quality and safety of patient-centered care by developing interprofessional relationships with dental colleagues for collaboration and referral.
