The Expanded Learning and Dedication to Elders in the Region (ELDER) project addressed the needs of under-served older adults by educating health care providers in home health and long-term care facilities. Four agencies in a health professional shortage/medically underserved area participated. Focus groups were held to determine agency-specific educational needs. Curricula from the John A. Hartford Foundation were adapted to design unique curricula for each agency and level of personnel during the first 2 years.

OBJECTIVE: To describe three interprofessional education (IPE) programs in geriatrics and to encourage senior care pharmacists' innovation and participation in IPE teaching.

DESIGN: Description of three geriatric IPE programs showing how pharmacy faculty along with colleagues in other health professions established, conducted, and evaluated their respective IPE programs.

Research shows slow improvement of the care of dying persons and their significant others. One of the reasons for that is the lack of palliative care education as an integral part of health professionals' undergraduate education. The paper discusses an attempt to develop innovative forms of palliative care education: an international, interprofessional and IT-supported undergraduate course for Swedish and Slovenian students of nursing, medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology and social work, which has been developed jointly by the two authors.

An evaluation of using champions to enhance inter-professional learning in the practice setting

The promotion of interprofessional working is a key government target for healthcare professionals. This article outlines one approach to establish inter-professional learning in the practice setting using systems based on current clinical placement allocation of students from a variety of health and social care professions. By utilising current unprofessional support systems for developing the learning environment, inter-professional learning opportunities were created for students.

Stereotyping as a barrier to collaboration: Does interprofessional education make a difference?

This research was part of a Health Canada funded initiative developed to provide evidence about the effectiveness of interprofessional education (IPE) interventions to promote collaborative patient-centred care. Health professional students' ratings of health professions and the effect of IPE on those ratings were examined. Participants were divided into three groups (N=51); control, education, and practice site immersion.

Attitudes toward safety and teamwork in a maternity unit with embedded team training

The objective of this study was to identify any residual challenges in a unit with a track record of good clinical performance. A cross-sectional survey of frontline caregiver attitudes was conducted using a validated psychometric instrument. A total of 69% (91 of 132) of eligible participants completed questionnaires. The results indicated positive safety culture, teamwork climate, and job satisfaction. Perceptions of high workload and insufficient staffing levels were the most prominent negative observations but not to the detriment of job satisfaction or perception of work conditions.

The importance and necessity of interprofessional collaboration (IPC) present challenges for educators as they determine how best to achieve IPC through interprofessional education (IPE). Simulation-based teaching has been shown to enhance students' understanding of professional roles and promote positive attitudes toward team members; yet, empirical evidence providing direction on the conditions necessary to promote these positive outcomes is lacking.
