Congratulations to our colleague and member of the OHNEP National Nursing Oral Health Workgroup, Dr. Cynthia Darling-Fisher, PhD, FNP-BC, from the University of Michigan School of Nursing for the publication of Oral Health: An Untapped Resource in Managing Gylcemic Control in Diabetes and Promoting Overall Health in the October issue of the Journal of Nurse Practitioners!
The article provides an excellent overview of the link between periodontitis and uncontrolled diabetes and discusses how patients' glycemic control may be impacted if periodontal infection is left unchecked. The team advocates for improving the strucutures of referrals and increasing interprofessional collaboration between primary care and dentistry to promote health. Supplemental materials including images demonstrating clinical signs of periodontal disease, as well as gums before and after treatment are available.
American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) members may receive 0.69 CE hours from AANP by completing the online post-test and evaluation.
Thank you Dr. Darling-Fisher and colleagues for this excellent oral health resource that highlights the oral-systemic health connection!
