Learning Module

A significant proportion (60-80%) of people prefer to die in their home, however few Americans (24%) have the opportunity to die at home. Participate in this module to learn the key elements and services of hospice and palliative care, and management of end of life symptoms. This module is designed to help multidisciplinary learners acquire communication skills to effectively deliver bad news, and discuss advance directives, including end of life decisions, using a shared decision making process.

This learning module, created by Gurveen Malhotra, Udai Jayakumar, and Tanjeev Kaur, discusses end of life care. By the end of the module, learners will be able to: (1) differentiate between key elements and services of hospice and palliative care; (2) discuss the effective management of common end-of-life symptoms; (3) identify criteria that qualify a patient for hospice care; (4) use effective communication skills to deliver bad news; and (5) discuss advance directives, end-of-life decisions, and the use of the shared decision making process. Registration is required to access the material but there is no charge.
