Integral Theory and Activity Theory as a Meta Model for IPE

I have come to believe that integral theory http://integrallife.com/node/37539 and activity theory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activity_theory are useful models that support analysis and understanding of inter professional health professions activity in light of the four quadrants of integral theory. What do others think about this? How might the application and intentional use of integral and activity theory advance our understanding and development of innovations in IPR education, practice and research?

James W. Begun, PhD, is James A. Hamilton Professor of Healthcare Management in the Division of Health Policy and Management, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota. He teaches management and leadership at the graduate level in the School of Public Health, where he received the Leonard M. Schuman Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009. Dr. Begun's publications include the books, Understanding Teamwork in Health Care (with G. Mosser, 2013), Leading Public Health: A Competency Framework (with J. Malcolm, forthcoming), and Managing Health Organizations for Quality and Performance (with L.F. Fallon and W. Riley, 2012). Dr. Begun has been active nationally in promoting competency-based education, serving as Chair of the Accrediting Commission on Education in Health Services Administration. He was awarded the Gary L. Filerman Prize for Innovation in Healthcare Management Education in 2008 by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. Dr. Begun serves on the Science Advisory Board, Plexus Institute; editorial advisory board of Health Care Management Review; and Higher Education Committee, American College of Healthcare Executives. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gordon Mosser,MD, is a senior fellow in the Division of Health Policy & Management, University of Minnesota School of Public Health. He has been a physician leader and general internist for 30 years. In 1983, he founded Aspen Medical Group, an interprofessional healthcare practice in Minneapolis-St. Paul. In 1993, he co-founded the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI), an association of 100 Minnesota medical groups and hospitals collaborating to improve the health care they provide. He served as ICSI's president until 2006, when he moved to the University of Minnesota. For 5 years he taught healthcare management in the School of Public Health. He has authored 30 articles and book chapters, mainly on topics in healthcare performance improvement. His most recent publication is Understanding Teamwork in Health Care, which he wrote with James W. Begun. Dr. Mosser earned his bachelor's and MD degrees at Harvard University and his Master of Letters degree in philosophy at Oxford University. He did a fellowship in epidemiology at Oxford a residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota.

Daniel Pesut PhD, is professor of Nursing Population Health and Systems Cooperative Unit and Director of the Katharine J. Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership and holds the Katherine R. and C. Walton Lillehei Chair in Nursing Leadership at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Throughout his 38 year career as a nurse he has held positions in both academic and public sectors serving in a variety of roles that include staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, director of nursing services, academic department chair, and associate dean. He values and supports creativity and innovation and is dedicated to the development of next generation nursing leaders through his coaching and consulting practice. He served as a Trustee of the Plexus Institute from 2005-2010 and was the Chair of the Plexus Institute Board of Trustees from 2011-2012.

Joel thanks for your comment we are in synchrony about this approach. I too created a course using integral theory as a meta-conceptual framework for inter-professional learning as part of some course work I did when completing a certificate in integral studies. I am going to see about activating it here in Minnesota. I think we at Minnesota would be very interested in piloting a program with professionals. Does anyone want to join us in this experiment? I think the time is right and people are eager for trans-theoretical and conceptual models to foster cross understanding for team work and leadership in IPE educational efforts. I also think that the Knotworking Activity theory has merit as a meta-framework... so combining Knotworking with Integral as well as some theory about partnerships http://www.partnershipway.org/ and power http://www.janethagberg.com/real_power.htm would be a very interesting way to move knowledge and action forward.

Integral Theory and Interprofessional development

The integral model is certainly comprehensive and robust enough to serve as a template for IPE. A simple application is the one I used to design a workshop entitled " Leading Change through Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: An Integral Approach" Brief synopsis: Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (ICP) is essential for health professionals deliberately working more closely with the common goal of building a safer and better patient-centered, community and environmentally oriented health care system in the US. This session presents ICP competencies using the innovative Integral approach to healthcare education. Using the four domains of Integral Theory, participants will increase knowledge and skills of both ICP as well as Integral Healthcare.

I took the four competencies of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and used the four quadrant system of Integral Theory to orient the competencies as well as to expand them.

We also submitted a course at Medical University of South Carolina of the same title. To date, curriculum folks have not seen the value of the integral approach.

My feeling is that it would serve the discussion if senior leadership could be taken through a session in integral theory and application to IPE and ICP. Not sure how to have that discussion.

Integral theory and our work

Excited to see you mention Integral Theory in the context of the health professions. IT has been my oriented theory for about 10 years now and I've been looking for meaningful applications of it in healthcare. Have seen some interesting things in the psyche world but little else. Attended the Integral Theory Conference this summer and had the pleasure of meeting and hearing from several interesting integral scholars who work in the healthcare professions. Perhaps the most impressive was Guy DuPlessis who spoke on the Integral Methodology of Addiction and who has a book coming out this fall. He speaks of IMP (Integral Methodological Pluralism, IMP, a concept illustrated by the work of Sean Espborn-Hargens on ecology which says that the more methodologies/disciplines brought to the study of an object the better the understanding of that object, its contexts, etc.) IMP also seems to say that through these multiple lenses our understanding will be potentially infinitely partial, therefore imprecise, but the composite though partial is significantly more meaningful than any one discipline's understanding....Anyway, met the Integral medicine group which is led by Joel Kreisberg from Berkeley as well. Are you aware of them?...Would love to explore IT in the context of healthcare. Let me know how we might procede; I suggest a Skype call. Best to you, Kristina
