We're looking into the possiblity of adding an IPE designation on student transcripts following completion of a number of largely extracurricular IPE activities. Do any of you have experience with this? We'd love any input about types of designations, tracking student completion, verification of competency attainment and other barriers or facilitators for this process.

We have just been tasked with finally pulling together a bigger picture effort across schools/departments to expand coverage of our IPE efforts. All of these posts are very helpful to start my brain thinking about drafting a plan that fits our specific needs.

And yes, added burden to faculty time (especially on a voluntary basis) is certainly a factor here too!
I know of a number of places that use an IPE portfolio or passport - this includes the learning outcomes and a menu of activities that learners can complete to get points (or badges). Such activities could include extra-curricular or student selected options. Ideally there would be reflection after completion - 'how do I know I have met the outcome?' However the major problem then is do these need to be faculty 'marked' - which can be very resource intensive with cohorts of 300+ learners.
I am interested in exploring the awarding of badges for IPE initiatives as a way of recognizing student efforts and achievements of comptetencies and also as a way of coordinating our IPE initiatives. You mention that you know a number of places and you mention points for badges, can you tell me who is doing that sort of thing so that I might follow up with them?

Certificates are quite popular at my institution, and I've often wondered whether there might be enough interest to support an IPE-specific one. These are tuition-generating programs with required components (typically coursework), and the certificate designation appears on transcripts. I would be interested to learn whether your institution would award a transcript designation for extracurricular activities undertaken on a voluntary basis. There has been talk of implementing a badge system in the Big 10 conference in the US for students to demonstrate achievement/competence in a variety of areas for extracurricular activities (e.g., leadership, etc.). I do not believe these would appear on a transcript, though. Will be interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for your thoughts. We offer a number of certificate programs as an institution, including an Interprofessional Geriatric Practice one through our School of Health Professions. We are discussing an IPE certificate, but more as a faculty development initiative than as a way to assist interested students in pursuing (and being recognized for) IPE competency. We have also been exploring digital badges as an institution. These would very possibly be used in place of any IPE transcript designation, though I'm not sure that they would appear on the transcript either. We view the advantages of the transcript designation as threefold: legitimize the work many students are already doing and perhaps incentivize those who need a "carrot" to do the additional work, draw external attention to the IPE taking place across the institution, and show the institutional commitment to IPE.
We do have some required IPE coursework and IPE embedded into many of the different program curricula, but we're hoping to include the many other IPE activities students have the option to attend as well since their learning in those endeavors is quite rich too. Now the question is how to weight programs, track attendance and determine competency attainment!

Hi Jill,
Thank you for your reply. We adapted and adopted the IPEC core competencies as an institution in late 2012. Ideally, all students graduate having obtained these on at least a basic level. One of the purposes of adding an IPE notation on the transcript would be perhaps to distinguish between those who obtain basic and advanced IPE proficiency. We do have a longitudinal Health Mentors program which is required for the majority of our students, but there are some who are not currently enrolled and there are also some students who participate in IPE activities well beyond what is required of them.
At the programmatic level, all of our IPE activities have learning objectives within the framework of our institutional core competencies. The programs range from classroom experiences to clinical observations and collaborative practice initiatives to simulation experiences, so the role of the student learners and their level of participation ranges as well. We also have an official IPE student group which organizes some events, as well as other student leaders/liaisons who participate in IPE outside of our learning activities. We'd like to find a way to clearly demonstrate the IPE taking place at the institutional level, as well as to recognize the participation and self-directed learning of those who achieve the competencies on a more advanced level. However, we're struggling with how best to track participation and verify attainment of competencies.
