The UVA Center for Academic Strategic Partnerships for Interprofessional Research and Education (Center for ASPIRE) is a collaboration between the UVA Schools of Nursing and Medicine and the Health Systems Library to nurture caregivers to be compassionate with patients and well-versed in collaborative team-based care.

Vision

To improve the quality of patient care through the development and adoption of effective methods of interprofessional education and practice

Mission

Work collaboratively with academic programs, research centers, faculty, students, residents, clinicians, patients and families to develop, implement and evaluate interprofessional education in an integrated continuum across all learning levels.

Principles

  • Interprofessional team-based practice is vital to improving access, quality and costs of healthcare.
  • Interprofessional education (IPE) should occur in a learning environment that fosters collaboration in providing patient-centered care that is respectful, compassionate and culturally sensitive.
  • IPE should be integrated into educational experiences at all learning levels.
  • Ongoing assessment of student and patient outcomes is essential to improving and expanding IPE.

Goals

  1. Support the design, implementation and evaluation of innovative, learning-level appropriate, and evidence-based IPE experiences across the spectrum of health professional education.
  2. Implement rigorous measurement of IPE- associated student, faculty, clinician and patient outcomes.
  3. Engage in cutting-edge IPE research including (but not limited to) new models for classroom, simulation, and clinical settings; validated instruments for measuring student outcomes; and data that links IPE with sustained changes in practice and patient outcomes.
  4. Share knowledge across programs and institutions through publications, presentations, and website.
