Description: Developing effective teams and assessing their performance lies at the heart of what we do as educators, human resource personnel, and researchers working in the field of interprofessional practice and education. Despite a considerable literature on teamwork across many disciplines, there is a real need to better understand “teamness” in health care, and the best way to capture its essence through appropriate assessments. Recognizing this need, the National Center has drafted a series of practical guides to help people to understand critical team attributes, review potential assessment instruments with a critical eye, adapt tools and develop their own tools for assessing teams.
The workshop leaders will share resources and early access to the draft practical guides. Participants will have the opportunity to give feedback on the strengths and limitations of the practical guide content for their own work. The participants will discuss the attributes they wish to measure and apply guidelines to select or build an appropriate measurement tool for particular assessment purposes.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
-
Understand the role of “teamness” as it relates to the National Center’s mission to generate research evidence linking interprofessional practice and education to health outcomes
-
Summarize key attributes of effective teams, based on the teamwork literature and a recent survey of national leaders
-
Discuss task interdependence and its effect on desired core team attributes, enablers and emerging states
-
Apply early “lessons learned” about teamwork from National Center network sites to local initiatives
-
Outline attributes fundamental to quality team performance assessment tools
-
List key considerations in building a custom-made instruments to assess team performance
-
Apply practical guidelines in selecting and/or customizing a team performance assessment tool
